This type of collaboration model for urban development that transcends the boundaries between the business sector, universities/university colleges and the public sector is called the Triple Helix. During recent years, a further significant group of social actors has been added to the model. Citizens, entrepreneurs, start-ups, non-profit organizations and firebrands have complemented the traditional original actors. This fourth group is assuming an increasingly crucial role for innovation and development of modern urban construction. The model consisting of four collaborating groups instead of three is called a Quadruple Helix. The model requires modern and flexible environments in which bridges are built between individuals and institutions and where trust, participation and transparency are created between all facets of society. Urban construction according to the Quadruple Helix collaboration model always has human beings at its centre and has become an important corner stone of the Swedish system of innovation.
